People like to postpone things for different reasons. Bad health, bad mood, or they are just afraid of something to happen. In other words either them or the situation right now is not perfect and doesn’t allow them to proceed.
But in fact most of the time they are afraid of nothing. Being perfect is not a precondition for most of the things in the world. It’s just because of insecurities and fears in today’s world people tend to hesitate and protect their already low self-esteem.
Let me tell you a story. I’ve been working in the IT industry for 10 years already and have seen different strategies taken by different companies to receive success. Some companies create a feature, test it, polish and then sell it. Some companies create a prototype of a feature and then start selling it. Can you imagine that? A prototype which has a screen with some buttons and a fancy layout. No behavior, no engine, no validation just a fancy screen with a few buttons! Now guess which companies are successful and gather more profits?
If you think that the one with a finished feature that’s not correct. In fact 90% of the features especially in Startups become useless since people reject it for different reasons. While 10% of others become popular and bring most of the profits to the table.
The companies taking approach with prototypes can deliver dozens of features within a few months. Now imagine how much it would take them to deliver these features if they polished them until ‘they are perfect’? It would be years.
The same applies to life. In fact we don’t have so much time to polish ourselves for anything. And what’s more important – it’s not needed. Being perfect is nothing else then voice of our insecurities. So the right strategy would be to do something. And to do something today.
